DIY Play Doh Elena from Avalor and Low View Counts!

I made a video with a Play-Doh egg surprise. If you have kids, you know what I'm talking about. Play-Doh egg surprise videos have a huge egg full of surprises (blind bags, mystery toys, and other small toys), and a specific character made of Play-Doh is attached to the outer portion of the egg. I decided I needed to do this, and I felt like I had a leg up with the idea of making an Elena of Avalor Play-Doh likeness. There were very few real Elena of Avalor YouTube videos. I say ‘real,’ it seems that many YouTube channels just included her name in their search tags, because when researching Elena of Avalor videos, a lot of videos came up, but only a handful mentioned Elena. The majority were Sofia the First of general Disney Princess videos.

Elena of Avalor will make her debut on the Disney Junior show, Sofia the First, on JuIy 22, 2016. Elena of Avalor will then become a spin off show of Sofia the First debuting August 1, 2016 on the Disney Channel. Elena of Avalor is the first Latina Disney Princess. Of course, she did not make her start in a Disney film; however, Disney is taking her role as the first Latina Princess seriously, which I applaud. We need diversity for children, especially strong, intelligent, and brave role models for children. Elena seems to have those qualities, as well as, her beauty. This summer 2016, she will even be making appearances at Disneyland in California, and later in the year, she will be making appearances at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.

Back to my Play-Doh escapades, I don't think I created a bad likeness of Elena; I just really could have done better. It has some qualities like Elena, but not enough where you would say, “Oh, that’s Elena from Avalor.” I guess you would just say, “Oh, good job!” I have a lot to live up to with the other talented YouTube channels that create anything from Play-Doh. I'm not an artist, but I am pretty crafty, so I didn't think much of this idea at first. I figured that I would make the Play-Doh face, fill the egg, apply, and then film. It was a harder task than I believed it would be. 

When you're making a Play-Doh likeness, mise en place is very important. I laid out my tools: one wood skewer, rolling pin, pizza slicer, butter knife, wax paper, and Play-Doh colors out on the table, and got to work. I quickly learned that my tools were totally wrong. I thought using my heavy duty rolling pin would be good, I was wrong. I thought using a butter knife, and a rolling pizza slicer would be good to cut, I was wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I realize now, I needed a smaller rolling pin, and an exact-o knife. Using the wooden skewer was to help me "draw" each shape. It worked, of course, but it left my Play-Doh stringy at the ends, so I had to finely trim the edges, which is why the exact-o is so important. 

Something that I was truly missing was the right colors. Elena of Avalor has a beautiful Hispanic chestnut skin tone with pink rosy cheeks. I couldn't even capture that. I should have been embarrassed to post it, but I really worked hard on it, which leaves me to my disappointment. Again, I thought this video was going to be the video that brings in more activity, but it's been over 12 hours and I've only got eight views. It saddens me. I'm trying so hard to get noticed, but it's not working. I feel like it's all been done before, and everyone who watches just sticks with their favorites and that's it. I need to stand out. But, how? I'll let you know when I find out.
