Family Movie Review: Sergeant Stubby: An American Hero Honor Past Veterans, Especially Our Four Legged Ones!

If you’re looking for the perfect family movie that celebrates loyalty, honor, and American history, then Sergeant Stubby: An American Hero is the film to watch! Sergeant Stubby: An American Hero is the captivating animated “tail” about a stray dog’s journey from homeless pup to a decorated war hero. Stubby got his name from his short, stubby tail. The animation of Stubby is just so cute! I love when he wants those belly rubs, I literally wanted to jump through the screen and hug him. 

Sergeant Stubby is just so beautifully animated, we were just mesmerized by the animation, and in addition to the heartwarming and beautiful story, we were just in awe! The movie has a lot of familiar voices in it like Logan Lerman who plays Stubby’s companion Corporal Robert Conroy, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Gerard Depardieu. The film chronicles this courageous dog’s journey from when he wanders into a training camp unit barracks in Connecticut, the historic 102nd infantry. Corporal Robert Conroy was allowed to keep Stubby as the 102nd infantry’s mascot, and from that point, they were inseparable friends. 

The film really does pay tribute to a time that really has somewhat been forgotten, and having a little movie night with the kids for the upcoming long weekend for the observance of Veteran’s Day is so fitting.  It is our job as parents to re-tell these tales of the American experience, and showing your kids a film like this makes it easier to start that conversation. After watching the film, my oldest son asked me so many questions about why there was a war, and if there are more service dogs in the military. Watching Sergeant Stubby: An American Hero with my kids started the conversation about war and sacrifice for your country in general as well, and he even asked about how other countries defend themselves. The telling of Sergeant Stubby doesn’t play the war down or even the gritty time period - the fear is present, and the fight is present, but there are so many heartwarming moments. Not only was Sergeant Stubby a hero on the battlefield, but he is a hero to all future brave animals that stand by their master and fleets during times of war and peace. 

Sergeant Stubby was the first and most decorated war dog, and his courageous story paved the way for future service animals. Sergeant Stubby’s obituary took up nearly a whole page of the New York Times; that’s how beloved he was at the time. Thankfully, this Veteran’s Day, our children can learn the sacrifices of how the men and women before them made to keep the United States safe, and Sergeant Stubby is one of those heroes.

Sergeant Stubby: An American Hero is available on DVD, Bluray, and on Video On Demand, Tuesday, November 6, 2018. After you go out and vote, buy this movie and talk about why we fight, why we vote, and how the powerful bond of humans and animals can stand the tests of time - much like Sergeant Stubby, a truly adorable patriot! 

We will be watching this movie this weekend with Grandpa who is a veteran, and I'm sure he will enjoy it! Even though Pop-pop's military journey was different than Conroy's and Stubby's, he still fought for his country. Let's hope for peace for all someday!
