At New York Toy Fair, I learned that LEGO will be releasing a totally new way to experience LEGO with their amazing new series, Hidden Side.
LEGO takes on the phenomenon of ghost hunting and pairs it with their amazing LEGO sets in the new series Hidden Side. I am super excited about this as we can now use Augmented Reality or AR through an app on our smart device to see what lurks on the other side. I love ghost hunting, even though I am a scaredy cat, but I love the stories of ghosts and these builds seem to be rich with storyline! There will be eight LEGO sets for the Hidden Side, and each will be fully functional LEGO builds, but once the app is turned on, you’ll see the hidden side featuring ghosts that you must fight and collect in order to restore balance to Newbury High. The story is that two teen bloggers, Jack and Parker, who happen to find out that their school has many secrets and those secrets can only be seen through their mobile phones!
We are the first person players teaming up with the teens in a makeshift ghost hunt. The app will always randomize gameplay to keep the experience fresh, and different scenarios and ways to play will keep the game moving in a seamless progression. When I heard the game explanation, I was totally creeped out, as these ghosts will absorb the battery life from your phone (not your actual phone, but your phone in the game)! In order to actually see the ghosts, once your set is built, you can hold up your smartphone to specific “points of possession” and activate these points to see the ghosts come to “life.” There is no technology at all in the sets themselves, everything moving is run through the app. You have to explore the set physically and also look at your smartphone to look for clues to locate the ghosts. It is highly recommended that you play with a smartphone, even though the app is supported on both smartphone and tablet, for seamless gameplay you have to keep one hand in the physical world and one hand in the digital world in order to activate the “points of possession” and to fight the ghosts. There will also be a digital game available on the app that you can play outside of the LEGO sets. Overall, the sets look really, really cool. Some specific ghosts like to hang out at specific places, but there is no limit to where these ghosts can go. You can venture to a diner, to the school, a graveyard, a lab, and more to explore the wonders of the Hidden Side.
Hidden Side is recommended for LEGO builders age seven and up, and the pricing for each set varies from $19.99 to $129.99, however, these sets are a continuous experience — nothing like we have ever seen before pairing physical builds with AR, I mean. The Hidden Side now opens the door to other worlds, more LEGO sets, and more storyline. Once we officially meet Parker and Jack, where will they go next? What else lurks beyond Newbury High? Available this summer August 2019, check out the Hidden Side sets’ tentative names, and pricing in my description below.
