You know that old saying? Rome wasn't built in a day. Well, the LEGO Colosseum may not be built in a day either, but that's okay, builders will want to soak in the glory of this timeless standing work of art. Boasting 9,036 pieces, this epic build displaying the most iconic structure built by humans could be yours this month! Designed by Rok Zgalin Kobe, this set embodies exquisite details from the original, but designing the LEGO Creator model was no easy task. Kobe says:
One of the biggest challenges and one of the most important things was to convey the Colosseum’s monumentality in the LEGO form. I felt that the LEGO model should display a special architectural feature of the original – the rows of columns flanking the arches in different styles. To achieve that, the model is constructed using an effect of vertical exaggeration. The cross-section is therefore far steeper than on the real structure. Hopefully, people will be inspired to learn more about the original through the experience of building the LEGO model.
The LEGO Colosseum stays true to the original.
At first glance, you will notice that the LEGO Colosseum stays true to the original. The details are just insane, and that this set is more than just piecing each brick together. There are different shades of colored bricks to mimic the wear and tear of 2,000 years of the Roman sun, natural disasters, multiple gladiator battles, war, and looting. Like the story of this iconic architectural phenomenon, each LEGO brick will prove to show you the majesty and awe-inspiring nature of this piece. Architectural buffs to Master Brick Builders ages 18+, will appreciate the time and care it took to create this piece. Make this some quality family time, build together, and take a moment to learn the ins and outs of this beautiful build. I look at each photo and see something new!
Standing on an oval base, the LEGO Colosseum has the ability to be displayed at all angles - a full 360-degree build encompassing one of Italy's most beautiful and most storied treasures. You can even see the stands that litter the amphitheater where ancient Romans gathered to watch the games. Multiple arches and columns circle the theatre. The column pieces are truly wonderful, and really make me love it even more. The real Colosseum features three different columns that support each floor and represent different styles from plain supportive beams to ornate structural details. The LEGO Colosseum required different LEGO pieces to fulfill this portion of the build, so the Ionic column on the second floor has a curly-curved detail, so they used a rollerskate piece and turned it upside down to create this part. Seeing fine details like these truly will make building this set as truly a treat!
